- Revising Computer Documentation for Comprehension: Ten Exercises in Protocol-Aided Revision. CDC Technical Report No. 14. Schriver, Karen A. Computer Oriented Programs Computer Uses in Education Higher Education Protocol Analysis Protocol Materials Reader Response Reading Comprehension Revision (Written Composition) Writing (Composition) Writing Exercises Based on the Protocol Aided Revision (PAR) system, this series of instructional units employs user protocols to provide the writer with feedback about a reader's response to a text and to help the writer become more sensitive to textual problems that may interfere with a reader's understanding. Geared to professionals who write on the job, the first of two introductory sections describes the text and includes both study strategies for maximizing understanding and advice on using the text. The second introductory section addresses teachers and provides information on the origin of the PAR system and outlines classroom activities. Each unit contains an example "problem text" in need of revision, a description of the user protocol based on the example, a summary of user questions/problems with the text, a revision of the problem text based on the reader's difficulties, strategies the writer used to revise the example, and a summary of strategies for revisors. Respectively, units cover (1) the control key, (2) commands for English text, (3) planning your document, (4) how to make a table of contents, (5) information commands, (6) introduction to "Mercury" (a mail system), (7) the Mail System, (8) introduction to "Oil" (a text editor), (9) the Integrated Library System, and (10) the design using system.
