  • Guidelines on Curriculum Development in Information Technology for Librarians, Documentalists, and Archivists. Cook, Michael Course Content Curriculum Development Developed Nations Developing Nations Educational Planning Foreign Countries Information Science Information Systems Information Technology Interdisciplinary Approach Librarians Library Education Units of Study These guidelines were developed as one of a series of studies aimed at developing training in information technology (IT) for the information professions, and encouraging and structuring the harmonization of education and training among librarians, information scientists, and archivists, the three main professions which together make up the central stream of information careers. An introduction presents the study background and aims, provides a definition of terms, and discusses some broad questions that should be considered before designing a curriculum. Detailed guidelines for the application of general norms to the education and training of the information science, library, and archive professions are then provided for the following areas: (1) Infrastructures (Overall Information Systems and Development Plans, Manpower Planning, Investment for IT Training, and Planning an IT Program); (2) The Question of Harmonization (First Professional Entry, Recruitment to Senior Management, First Entry for Paraprofessionals, Recruitment to Teaching Posts in Training Schools, and Continuing Education and Retraining); and (3) The Curriculum (Scope and Range of Information Technology, Course Modules, and Course Construction). The guidelines are also presented in summary form, and a bibliography and references are provided. (KM)
