Continuing Education Developing Nations Documentation Foreign Countries Higher Education Information Services Information Systems Information Technology Instructional Materials Library Education Library Instruction Library Personnel Position Papers Preservation The improvement of information infrastructures in the eastern and southern sub-region of Africa through the adequate training of personnel for libraries and information establishments is one of the major objectives of the Education, Science and Documentation Centre of the German Foundation for International Development (DSE). This reader, designed to be useful for the training of students in librarianship and for in-service training of staff in libraries and information centers, contains eight articles covering various aspects of librarianship and documentation: (1) "Continuing Library Education for Social Change" (J. Reece); (2) "The Role of Libraries and Documentation Centres in Research--A Case for Kenya" (W. O. Ochiengh); (3) "The Legal Deposit System in Kenya" (N. Kamau); (4) "User Education--A Critique" (E. W. Muya); (5) "The New Information Technology and the Book Professionals--A War of Survival" (S. Ouma); (6) "The Problems and Conservation of Library Materials" (E. W. Muya); (7) "Library/Information Manpower Survey in the Sudan" (C. Wesley); and (8) "Types of Educational Programmes in Zambia--Role and Relevance" (O. N. Mohamedali). Appendices include guidelines for authors interested in contributing to future volumes and a bibliography of DSE publications on information and documentation. (KM)
