Each chapter deals with a different content area, and is further subdivided into specific topics, with many suggested activities for each. After an introduction and a note to teachers, the first section, on English, suggests activities related to business English, language arts, literature, reading, Scholastic Aptitude Tests, speaking and listening, thinking skills, and writing. The second section, on mathematics, shows how newspaper stories relate mathematical principles to real life and help students gain an appreciation of the role of math in society. The third section gives suggestions for classes on elementary science, energy, safety, and weather. The fourth section, on social studies, contains ideas for teaching citizenship, community studies, contemporary issues, economics, elections, general issues, geography, global perspectives, government/political science, history, and law. The fifth and most lengthy section covers special areas and recommends uses for newspapers for a number of purposes including art instruction, bulletin boards, career education, foreign languages, home economics, library skills, music, physical education, religion, scavenger hunts, study skills, and values. The sixth section covers teaching about newspapers and provides hints on introducing the newspaper, newspaper writing, and freedom of the press. The final section shows how classified advertisements, comic strips, photos, and sports pages can be used as teaching tools. The guide is illustrated and contains a glossary of newspaper terms. (SKC)
