It is noted that there seems to be no commonly held set of titles for support staff and that different ranks of personnel are usually distinguished by some combination of criteria such as supervision given and received, policy-making authority, responsibility, complexity and/or diversity of work, personal attributes, professional activities, and creativity. A concise summary of classification schemes, position guides, and job descriptions in ARL libraries is provided; and documents are presented in three sections covering: (1) ranking criteria for librarians at Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Louisiana State University, Rutgers University, the University of Michigan, the State University of New York at Albany, Stanford University, Yale University, and Cornell University; (2) library assistant job descriptions for Stanford University, Louisiana State University, and the State of Nebraska; and (3) instructions for preparing job descriptions from the University of Arizona, Case Western Reserve University, and Boston University.
