Academic Libraries Educational Planning Foreign Countries Higher Education Library Planning Library Services Library Surveys Long Range Planning Needs Assessment Research Libraries This collection of documents from Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries in the United States and Canada contains examples of strategic planning, a method which deliberately attempts to concentrate resources in areas that could make a substantial difference in future performance and capabilities. Contents include: (1) a university plan from the University of Pittsburgh; (2) library environmental assessments from the Office of Management Studies, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Texas A&M University Library, and the University of Michigan; and (3) long-range planning documents from the University of California at Riverside, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Western Ontario. A concise summary of a telephone survey of 30 ARL libraries indicates that most ARL strategic planning documents are descriptive of library strengths and weaknesses; contain considerable speculation about the future prospects of research libraries; identify specific priorities and define the costs of desired courses of action; and suggest an activist posture on the part of library leadership in shaping the views and actions of the university community. A 13-item bibliography and an ARL Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit evaluation form are also included. (KM) |
