  • Collection Development Organization and Staffing in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 131. Bobick, James E. Academic Libraries Administrative Organization Charts Financial Support Higher Education Library Collection Development Library Personnel Library Surveys Occupational Information Orientation Materials Program Evaluation Recruitment Research Libraries Training Trend Analysis Based on responses of 53 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries to a 1986 Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) survey, this kit examines the changes in the organization and staffing of the collection development function in ARL libraries over the past 3 to 4 years. A concise summary discusses survey results, which indicated the prevalence of three basic trends: (1) continuing changes in the organization and staffing of collection development; (2) increasing emphasis on formal training and liaison with teaching faculty; and (3) growing interest in the development and execution of studies on the cost, performance, and analysis of the collection development/management function. Selected survey results are provided; and original documents submitted from ARL libraries include organization charts of 14 collection development units; vacancy announcements and position descriptions from 15 libraries; examples of orientation, training, and other aids from 10 libraries; and study reports from 3 libraries. A SPEC kit order form and evaluation form are also included. (KM)
