- Animal Antics. Program Guide for the Texas Reading Club, 1987. Larson, Jeanette Animals Annotated Bibliographies Childrens Literature Elementary Education Films Group Activities Handicrafts Library Planning Library Services Program Development Public Libraries Reading Programs Recreational Reading State Programs Developed for the Texas Reading Club, a program sponsored cooperatively by local libraries and the Texas State Library and designed to encourage children and their parents to read and to use the library, this guide is intended to inspire program ideas, including activities, crafts, books, and audiovisuals, appropriate to the Reading Club's 1987 program theme, "Animal Antics." Most of the guide's activities are best suited for readers in grades one through six. The Texas Reading Club is briefly described; program ideas and crafts are discussed; a calendar suggesting special days for animal-related activities is provided; and weekly themes and activities, including diagrams and patterns for crafts, are presented for an 8-week program. Following the weekly activity suggestions, an annotated bibliography lists both general sources and fiction, non-fiction, and picture books specifically related to each week's theme and activity. Annotated listings are also provided of 16mm films, organizations from which additional information may be obtained, periodicals, and speakers relevant to the "Animal Antics" theme. A list of commercial suppliers of items that could be used in the reading program and three pages of clip art designs are also provided. (KM)
