  • Marketing Children's Services at the Central Library of Sacramento Public Library. Hicks, Mary Frances Children Community Characteristics Community Surveys Library Planning Library Services Marketing Needs Assessment Public Libraries Questionnaires Reading Habits Use Studies User Needs (Information) Conducted prior to the building of a new central library, this study was designed to assess the need for children's library services in downtown Sacramento. The development of a profile of the community environment and general characteristics of the population through the use of secondary sources is described; the assessment of family needs and desires for children's library services by means of a telephone survey of families in the downtown Sacramento area is discussed; and demographic data obtained through the telephone survey are presented. Because both the community profile and the survey documented a small population of children in the downtown area, it is concluded that the central library's staff must seek patrons outside the downtown area; and recommendations for further study as well as suggestions for marketing in terms of product, place, price, and promotion are provided. The text is supplemented with 54 tables and a 42-item bibliography is provided. Appendices include maps of the community areas and neighborhoods; the survey questionnaire; and lists of the public elementary and middle schools in the study area and their addresses, community organizations serving children and families in the study area, and licensed child day care centers, parent participation preschools, and headstart programs in the study area.
