  • Library Services through Major Urban Resource Libraries (MURLs) and Metropolitan Public Libraries Which Serve as National or Regional Resource Centers. Fogelstrom, Clarence Annual Reports Data Analysis Federal Aid Library Acquisition Library Expenditures Library Materials Library Services Library Statistics Program Descriptions Public Libraries Regional Programs Resource Centers This report describes library services funded as specified by the Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA), Title I, major urban resource library (MURL) provisions, and services offered by metropolitan public libraries that served as national or regional resource centers during fiscal 1985. A review of annual reports provided by state libraries indicates that many MURL activities commenced in fiscal year 1984 were continued, the two major activities being the purchase of library materials and interlibrary loan services. Although similar to MURL activities, metropolitan public library activities placed greater emphasis on education and training for library personnel and trustees in the application of technology for use in libraries; the acquisition, cataloging, and processing of library materials for a number of public libraries; and the purchase of videotape recorders, compact disk players, and mini or personal computers. Detailed program statistics provided for each state include the MURL reserve amount, project numbers, total state population, MURL expenditures, state expenditures, local expenditures, cities with population over 100,000, population served, national or regional resource centers, and service area. Two appendices include state-by-state listings of the amounts reserved for MURLs from fiscal 1984-86, and the amounts expended by regional resource centers in fiscal 1984 and programmed from fiscal 1985-86 funds.
