Burns, Robert, Jr. Academic Libraries Data Collection Higher Education Library Administration Library Planning Library Statistics Library Surveys Questionnaires Records (Forms) Research Libraries Statistical Studies Focused on the development of definitions and guidelines for management statistics, this Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit is based on the responses of 91 academic members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to a survey investigating their internal uses of statistics, external statistics reporting, and tools for gathering statistics. This survey was mailed to 106 ARL libraries in September 1986. A concise summary of survey results discusses the gathering of management statistics, internal uses of management statistics, the nature of statistics and reports, data collection for external agencies, and needs and trends. A presentation of survey results is followed by a collection of 17 original documents submitted by ARL academic members which include definitions and guidelines from Texas A&M University, Stanford University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Illinois, and planning reports from the University of California at Irvine, Duke University, New York University, Queen's University, and Stanford University. A five-item bibliography and SPEC kit evaluation and order forms are also provided. (KM)
