- Installing a Microcomputer Lab in a Medium-Sized Academic Library. Hallman, Clark N. And Others Academic Libraries Administrative Policy Building Plans Computer Software Design Requirements Higher Education Laboratories Library Facilities Library Planning Library Services Microcomputers Designed to serve as a blueprint for other libraries developing plans for microcomputer facilities, this report describes the planning and implementation of a microcomputer laboratory at South Dakota State University's Hilton M. Briggs Library. The university's plan for installing microcomputer labs on campus and the initial planning process undertaken by the library upon learning that it had been chosen as a microcomputer lab site are summarized; and the activities of the library's Site Selection Committee are described, including its consideration of the lab's impact on traffic patterns, noise, structural remodeling, staffing, proximity to other service areas, and security. In addition, the design of the lab is discussed; and policies and procedures for use of the lab, software, and administration of the lab are summarized. Finally, the process of opening the lab is described, including the posting of signs, maintenance, and publicity. The text is supplemented with three figures, including two floor plans; and the Library Microcomputer Lab Policy and Procedural Statements, a Microcomputer Lab Information sheet, and a 17-item bibliography are appended.
