In providing access to some of this literature, this guide concentrates on reference sources which may be found in McLennan Library of McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Areas of study for which most materials are located in another library, such as applied sociology or the sociology of education, have generally been treated only as they are covered in works of broader scope. In addition, topics given primary coverage in other bibliographic guides prepared by the Reference Department have been given limited coverage or omitted. Sources for theses have not been listed as a separate category in this guide, although some thesis bibliographies on particular topics have been included in the appropriate subject sections. Indexes to periodical articles of broad sociological interest are listed in a separate section. Indexes to periodical articles on more specialized topics are included in the appropriate subject section, e.g., demography. The bibliography is organized into the following five sections: (I) Guides and Handbooks; (II) Dictionaries and Encyclopedias; (III) Directories and Biographical Sources; (IV) Statistics; and (V) Bibliographic Sources. The last section is divided into: (A) Sociology and General Social Sciences, including current and retrospective bibliographies; (B) Special Subjects, including crime, delinquency, deviance and drug use; demography; ethnic studies; industrial sociology; research methods; rural and urban sociology; sexuality and family relations; social problems; social structure and change; and sociological theory; and (C) Periodical Lists.
