| contents | Preservation Planning Program. Study Report. Iowa State University Library. Final Report. Galejs, John And Others Academic Libraries Higher Education Library Administration Library Facilities Library Materials Library Planning Long Range Planning Physical Environment Position Papers Preservation Self Evaluation (Groups) This final report is a product of a Preservation Planning Program (PPP) self-study conducted by the Iowa State University, working with the Association of Research Libraries' (ARL) Office of Management Studies. The PPP is designed to put self-help tools into the hands of library staff responsible for developing plans and procedures for preserving library materials. The library's collections and preservation activities are described, planning assumptions are discussed, and the reports of four preservation task forces on the organization of preservation activities, environmental conditions, physical conditions of the collections, and preservation education resources are summarized. In addition, 32 task force recommendations are presented, organized around four central goals: (1) providing a coordinated library-wide approach to preservation; (2) maintaining and extending the useful life of the collections to make them available for future use; (3) achieving and maintaining a preservationally sound physical environment; and (4) educating staff and patrons in preservation issues and proper techniques for handling library materials. Each recommendation includes a statement of implementation covering responsibility for implementation, timeframe, priority, and cost. Seven appendices include graphic representations of the overall condition, brittleness, and acidity of the collection and of environmental readings, and listings of the percent of acidity and physical characteristics of various library collections. A listing of task force members is also provided. (KM) |
