contents A Survey of 154 Randomly Selected Libraries in the State of New York Concerning Their Acquisition and Treatment of Computer Software. Camerman, Virginia T. Cataloging Computer Software Library Acquisition Library Circulation Library Surveys Maintenance Public Libraries Questionnaires School Libraries Special Libraries Storage Tables (Data) Users (Information) This report describes a study designed to determine whether the collection of computer software by libraries falls into a pattern of library type and whether patron use of computer software falls into a pattern of clientele type. Following a summary of previous research, a discussion of the study methodology describes a survey of 154 randomly selected public library systems, school library systems, and 3 R's (reference, research, and resource) councils in New York State to collect information on various aspects of library software acquisition, selection, cataloging, storage, handling, use, and circulation. Survey results obtained from 128 respondents (an 83.1% response rate) are presented in 152 tables. In addition, interpretations and conclusions drawn from results are both summarized and presented separately for the following survey respondents: (1) public libraries; (2) public school libraries; (3) non-public school libraries; (4) junior college libraries; (5) college libraries; (6) an army library; (7) government libraries; (8) government law libraries; (9) medical libraries; (10) library systems; (11) 3 R's councils; (12) school library systems; and (13) special libraries. Notes and a 19-item bibliography are provided, as well as the survey cover letter, follow-up cover letter, and questionnaire. (KM)
