And Others Abstracts Academic Libraries Cataloging Higher Education Indexes Library Catalogs Library Planning Library Technical Processes Program Descriptions Records (Forms) Serials Intended to provide guidelines for similar future undertakings, this report provides a comprehensive record of a serials cataloging project undertaken by the General Reference and Periodicals Department of the University of Miami's Otto G. Richter Library between January 1985 and August 1986. The project was designed to catalog the department's abstract and index (A&I) collection in order to provide a subject arrangement by call number. A brief introduction summarizes the project, and detailed discussions describe preliminary project activities, the cataloging process, recordkeeping procedures, preparing for the reorganization, the reorganization itself, and the final phase of the project. A revised label policy developed to combat the problem of call number labels not adhering properly is also included. In addition, the following information is provided in eight appendices: (1) A&I Transfer List; (2) Inventory and Reclassification Lists; (3) A&I Alphalist; (4) A&I Shelflist; (5) A&I Keyword Index; (6) A&I Subject List; (7) sample records from the reorganization; and (8) A&I Cancellation and Discontinued Lists.
