After describing the general character of the Institute and constitutional matter, different areas of its work are covered. These areas are characterized in two parts as professional education (both initial and inservice education) and the academic study of education and research. The problems of the site of the Institute library and the Institute's international role are also considered, along with information about the Institute staff, departments, centers, and the issue of finance. Finally, the Institute's future role as a school of the University is discussed. Appendices (the bulk of the volume) include: analysis of student numbers; examination results for each type of diploma, degree, and certificate; doctor and master of philosophy awards, the recipient's name, date of award, and title of research; research grants awarded by title, recipient, amount, and source; analysis of overseas student numbers; information on Bedford Way Papers; and a bibliography of staff publications.
