  • Mass Communication Thesauri and Controlled Vocabularies: An Evaluation. Brunning, Dennis R. Comparative Analysis Design Requirements Evaluation Criteria Indexing Journalism Mass Media Professional Associations Relevance (Information Retrieval) Subject Index Terms Thesauri User Needs (Information) Vocabulary Intended as a basis for determining how the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) should proceed to meet its controlled vocabulary needs, this paper analyzes and evaluates the major published controlled vocabularies and thesauri used for the retrieval of mass communication literature. Following brief definitions of controlled vocabulary and thesauri, the requirements of a good controlled vocabulary are identified, as: (1) being adequate and relevant; (2) being sufficiently specific to allow a majority of searches to be conducted at an acceptable level of precision; (3) being sufficiently precoordinate to avoid false coordination and incorrect term relationships; (4) being consistent in indexing and searching through control of synonyms, near synonyms, and quasi-synonyms; (5) having reduced terminological ambiguity; and (6) helping in the selection of appropriate terms through some form of hierarchical and cross-reference structure. These six criteria are then applied to the Library of Congress Subject Headings, Communication Abstracts, Journalism Abstracts, Thesaurus: Mass Communication, and the Thesaurus of ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) Descriptors. On the basis of this evaluation, it is concluded that AEJMC requires, at the most, its own indexing/abstracting services or, at the least, a revision of current practices, coupled with the design of a thesaurus adequate to its requirements.
