- Preservation Guidelines in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 137. Academic Libraries Decision Making Guidelines Higher Education Library Collections Library Materials Library Planning Preservation Prevention Program Descriptions Research Libraries This Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit draws on materials related to preservation activities that have evolved over the past six years. In addition, information obtained from 97 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries that responded to a 1984/85 pilot preservation survey conducted by the ARL Microform Project, as well as from eight ARL libraries that have recently begun or expanded preservation programs, is incorporated in a concise summary of the development of comprehensive program statements, decision-making and setting priorities, brittle books programs, and trends and needs in preservation programs. The Guidelines for Minimum Preservation Efforts in ARL Libraries are then presented, followed by original documents on the following topics: (1) Preservation Policies and Priorities (the University of Cincinnati, Emory University, Columbia University, the National Library of Medicine, and Northwestern University); (2) Decision Making (the University of Wisconsin, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, the Library of Congress, Yale University, Ohio State University, and the University of Connecticut); and (3) Brittle Books Programs (the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, the Library of Congress, the University of Michigan, and the University of Pittsburgh). A seven-item bibliography and SPEC kit order and evaluation forms are also provided. (KM)
