- Kansas Volunteer Tutor Utilization: Training of Resources (KV-TUTOR). FY86 Final Report. Adult Basic Education Adult Literacy Adult Reading Programs Coordination Literacy Education Program Development Program Effectiveness Program Implementation Statewide Planning Tutors Volunteer Training Volunteers The Kansas Volunteer Tutor Utilization (KV-TUTOR) project was undertaken to explore some of the possibilities of using volunteer tutors in adult basic education (ABE) programs. A volunteer structure was developed at 16 local ABE programs throughout the state. KV-TUTOR actively promoted these volunteer systems by contacting (through letters, phone calls, and visits) ABE directors and area coordinators to demonstrate how their programs could benefit by using volunteers to extend existing staff and by assisting ABE directors in selecting and training volunteer managers. The new volunteer coordinators received intensive training at a 2-day volunteer management workshop (in such areas as planning and evaluating, screening and recruiting, training, motivating, and managing conflicts), and onsite and/or small regional group training sessions were held to familiarize tutors with the characteristics of adult learners, the language experience approach, sight words and phonics, and goal setting and lesson planning. The State Library of KV-TUTOR provided an 800 telephone number for use in statewide recruiting efforts, and many libraries developed locations to serve low-level or nonreading adults by providing them with high-interest, low-vocabulary books. Individual program managers were required to summarize their programs' activities and to complete volunteer/student time reports. Overall program statistics, individual program summaries and statistics, the KV-TUTOR statement of purpose, and a fiscal report are appended. (MN)
