contents Teaching Assistant Handbook, 1986-1987. Astronomy Classroom Techniques College Science Educational Facilities Graduate Students Higher Education Laboratories Physics School Organization Teaching Assistants A handbook for teaching assistants (TAs) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is presented to provide information concerning departmental organization and facilities as well as teaching ideas and problems. TAs with the department are either graders who primarily grade homework and tests and graduate teachers who conduct recitations and/or laboratories as well as grading exams, homework, and lab reports. Policies of the Graduate Committee on TAs cover outside employment, what to do if the assistantship is removed, and requesting release from TA responsibilities. In addition to the evaluation of TA and TA awards, teaching hints are offered concerning the classroom, examination proctoring, teaching recitation classes, opening of semester activities, and the introductory laboratory. Support facilities are also covered, including the lecture demonstration area, elementary and advanced laboratories, tutoring facilities, and computing facilities. Policies concerning student injury and telephone use are specified, and information is provided on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library and the Counseling Center. (SW)
