contents Network of Alabama Academic Libraries Collection Assessment Manual. Medina, Sue O. And Others Academic Libraries Citation Analysis Consultants Evaluation Methods Higher Education Library Acquisition Library Collection Development Library Collections Library Planning Library Role Library Statistics This manual was developed to assist the members of the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries in the library collection assessment that is now required by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education as a component of any proposal that an institution submits for new program review and approval. This assessment component considers the ability of the library to support the new program and, if necessary, identifies the steps required to attain adequacy in specific subject areas. The manual presents four different methodologies for assessing the collection: (1) compiling statistics; (2) list checking; (3) citation analysis; and (4) expert appraisal. Collection level codes developed by the Research Libraries Group, the American Library Association, and a coordinated collection development program in Indiana are provided for use in describing the collection, and suggestions for preparing the assessment report are offered. References are provided at the end of various sections in addition to the 36-item bibliography. Eight appendices include additional guidelines and information sources as well as sample reports. (EW)
