Commentary based on a thorough review of documents submitted by 60 libraries includes an overview of the responses; a discussion of criteria used in making qualitative judgments; appraisal materials and guidelines used; peer and merit increase review; and trends and issues. Tabulated survey results are followed by documents arranged in three categories: (1) Overviews of Procedures--University of California at Los Angeles, Texas A&M University, University of Oregon, University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; (2) Peer Review--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Kansas, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; (3) Merit Increase Review--University of California at Riverside, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Stanford University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and Kent State University. A number of the documents include copies of forms used in the evaluation process, and a 10-item bibliography is provided. (EW)
