Ensign, David And Others Computer Software Copyrights Court Litigation Elementary Secondary Education Higher Education Laws Legal Responsibility Libraries Microcomputers Policy Videotape Recordings Developed to help library media personnel, administrators, and educators understand and work with the copyright law as it applies to videotape and microcomputer software, this handbook provides: (1) an overview of copyright, including rights granted to copyright holders and libraries and court interpretation of the copyright law; (2) suggestions for ways that libraries can avoid copyright liability; (3) remedies if a library is sued for copyright infringement; (4) a discussion of issues related to microcomputer software copyright, including "shrink wrap" license agreements, archival copies of programs, and suggestions for avoiding liability; and (5) a discussion of issues related to videotape copyright, including performances of commercial videotapes, off-air recording by educators, and suggestions for avoiding liability. Questions about software and videotape copyright asked by Kansas librarians are answered, and suggestions for developing a library copyright policy and for writing for permission for circumstances beyond fair use are included. The International Council for Computers in Education 1987 Policy Statement on Software Copyright and Congressional guidelines for off-air taping of broadcast television programs are appended.
