Elementary Education Program Guides Program Implementation Reading Improvement Reading Instruction Reading Programs Reading Skills Remedial Reading This handbook describes the procedures for implementing the Comprehensive Reading Program of the Chicago Public Schools, a reading program for all students in kindergarten through grade 8 which is consistent with the goals established by the Illinois State Board of Education. Intended as a guide for staff and as an aid in staff development activities, the handbook is designed to serve as a basis for implementation of the regular reading program as well as programs of reading instruction for special education students, limited-English-proficient students, and students in the Education Consolidation and Improvement Act Chapter 1 and other funded programs. The handbook presents the expected learning objectives, program components, implementation procedures (including placement, reading time allotment, grouping for instruction, instructional strategies and materials, and the role of the library program), and the management and monitoring system for each level.
