Against this background, analyses are made of the intermediary role of the information professional who serves to link the user and the contents of documents--both those that are under his control and those that are not--and how he should be trained in order to obtain the basic knowledge and skills needed to perform his duties effectively. An outline of a curriculum designed to produce an information professional who will play a leading role in creating this link between the user and his information needs is also provided.
