Campbell, Charles R. Academic Standards College Athletics Higher Education Institutional Characteristics Institutional Evaluation Institutional Mission Intercollegiate Cooperation School Policy Social Values Team Sports This practicum evaluated the impact which Arizona State University (ASU) at Tempe's sports operation had on the university's ability to carry out its mission of education and research. Information was collected from library research on sports operations and educational institutions in general, and on the sports program at ASU. Personal interviews were conducted with the principal administrators of the university. This material was presented in the context of six situation audits highlighting the university's internal strengths and weaknesses as well as its external opportunities and threats. General findings from this analysis were: (1) there was an overemphasis on money and winning; (2) academically unqualified students were enrolled at the university; and (3) the university was not doing all that could be done to make sure that sports did not conflict with its mission. Recommendations are presented in the form of guidelines for action emphasizing the maintenance of a sports environment which recognizes and supports the concept of academic excellence. (Author/JD) |
