Information Centers Information Retrieval Library Networks Library Research Local Area Networks Microcomputers Online Searching Users (Information) This examination of the use of local area networks (LANs) by libraries summarizes the findings of a nationwide survey of 600 libraries and information centers and 200 microcomputer networking system manufacturers and vendors, which was conducted to determine the relevance of currently available networking systems for library and information center use. LANs and their components are described, and the role of microcomputers in LAN development is considered. The results of the study are provided together with a sample list of libraries and information centers that currently use LANS. (EW)
