Computer Networks Computer System Design Information Centers Library Networks Library Research Local Area Networks Microcomputers Needs Assessment This paper presents an interim report of a nationwide study of microcomputer networking in American libraries and information centers. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the relevance of currently available networking systems for use in libraries and information centers. Two major aspects are investigated. First, using a sample of libraries and information centers, the need for microcomputer networking is being assessed. Second, microcomputer networking manufacturers and vendors are being investigated to identify systems that can be adapted/adopted for library/information center applications. Preliminary results indicate that data sharing is the most important reason for microcomputer networking in libraries. The final report will provide guidelines on evaluation and selection of networking systems. The text is supplemented by one figure and two tables. (13 references) (Author/EW)
