  • Library 110: Introduction to Library Resources. An Independent Study Course. Second Edition, Revised. Alleman, Virginia Davis, Ramona Academic Libraries Higher Education Independent Study Library Instruction Library Materials Reference Materials Users (Information) Videotape Cassettes Workbooks Worksheets This workbook is designed for use by students in conjunction with a one-unit college level independent study course with no formal group meeting or letter grades given. The workbook is designed to familiarize users with the facilities and resources of the college's library/learning center and aid in the development of skills that will be generally useful in whatever libraries the students encounter in the future. A single summary sheet briefly outlines directions for the students' use of the manual, and gives the dates that assignments are due. The five sections of the manual contain nine units: (1) preliminaries (procedures; orientation); (2) the card catalog (author/title section; subject section; parts of a catalog card; Dewey Decimal System, filing, shelving; pamphlets); (3) periodicals (periodicals and their indexes; specialized indexes; the library's own periodical list; newspapers and their indexes; Magazine Index; Search Helper); (4) reference (encyclopedias; dictionaries; biographical sources; statistical sources; Book Review Digest); and (5) conclusions (final exam; evaluation). Students are required to study the material presented in each unit, view the associated videotape if there is one, answer questions on worksheets following each unit, and complete the final examination and evaluation after progressing through the entire manual in the given sequence.
