Comparison of the results of pre- and post-grant surveys conducted to determine the level of the residents' awareness of the problems of illiteracy showed an increase from 60% to 81% in the number who knew about the local literacy council. Volunteer tutors were recruited via an organized advertising campaign consisting of newspaper ads, radio spots, public speaking engagements, and printed brochures. Six series of training workshops were conducted and 48 volunteers completed the training to become certified tutors. Students were also recruited through an advertising campaign, which included radio spots, posters, and postcards. Thirty-one new students were matched up with tutors and four existing students were matched with new tutors. The library also acquired a microcomputer and 30 software programs appropriate for teaching reading and reinforcing newly acquired reading skills. The five attachments that make up the major part of this report include the literacy promotion contract; statements of the results of the awareness surveys and a copy of the questionnaire; a summary of the speaking engagements/presentations carried out by the literacy coordinator; copies of the mailings; an outline of the literacy workshop for tutors; a summary of the contract advertising; letters of support; assurances; a 23-item annotated list of the literacy software purchased; and the final financial status and performance report.
