Edsall, Shirley Academic Libraries Curriculum Development Databases Graduate Surveys Higher Education Job Satisfaction Library Education Library Schools Models Needs Assessment Professional Occupations Questionnaires Research Methodology This report presents the model and methodology that were used in building a database of information on 600 graduates of the School of Information and Library Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, which was accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1972 (another 25 graduates were selected out for sampling purposes during the survey instrument design process). This database was designed for use in the evaluation and testing of significant indicators that could be utilized in the internal design and operation of the program; it could also serve other programs of education in librarianship as a basis for the evaluation and assimilation of a similar data collecting activity. The five study objectives outlined include specifications for identifying and obtaining input from persons engaged in similar projects; selecting consultants to help design the instrument; the data gathering itself; the codification of the survey instrument; and the eventual compilation in report form of the findings. The paper then provides details of the survey instrument and a discussion, analysis, and summary of the findings of the survey. A copy of the 5-part, 66-question survey instrument is appended.
