The volume presents an overview of the development and change in Japanese children's literature in terms of: (1) a new democratic philosophy, 1946-1955; (2) social reforms, 1956-1965; (3) an era between economic and social dreams and reality, 1966-1975; and (4) the economic and social changes of the 1980s. The titles are arranged by year and alphabetically by author under the categories of: (1) children's books and periodicals; (2) reference sources (history and criticism, exhibition catalogs, and periodicals); and (3) reprints of pre-World War II children's literature (books and collections and anthologies). Titles appear in Japanese and English, and special awards are noted. Title, author, and artist indexes are provided. (JHP)
