  • Importance of Effective Communication to Library Leadership or Communication, Communication, Communication. Stewart, Susan Academic Libraries Behavior Change Communication Skills Feedback Higher Education Leadership Qualities Library Administration Library Personnel Library Science Self Evaluation (Individuals) This discussion of the nature and role of communication skills in implementing job responsibilities of librarians and information specialists argues that the most important foundation of effective library leadership is communication. The paper begins by reviewing the literature on leadership and developing a set of leadership characteristics. It then presents a brief overview of the process of communication, some examples of the various types of communication, and ways in which communications are influenced; underscores the vital connection between leadership and effective communications; and suggests practical ways of assisting librarians, from first line supervisors to library directors, to enhance their communication skills, which, in turn, enhance their leadership abilities. In conclusion it is suggested that effective leadership is necessary to carry the profession to even greater levels of success. (18 notes, 17 references) (CGD)
