- Japan Honors America. Six Librarians Cited for Meritorious Service. Welch, Theodore F. Awards Biographies Cooperation Foreign Countries Government Role Librarians Library Science Recognition (Achievement) This report profiles American librarians who have been honored by the Japanese government for their contributions to Japanese well-being, in line with a century-old program of recognition of its own citizenry, i.e., the conferring of medals, or kunsho, by the government on foreigners who have rendered illustrious, eminent, and distinguished service in civil or military life. Following a brief description of the various awards (or orders), the six U.S. librarians cited for meritorious service and awarded kunsho--either the Order of the Sacred Treasure or Order of the Rising Sun--are introduced through short biographies; Verner W. Clapp; Robert B. Downs; Robert L. Gitler; Foster E. Mohrhardt; Andrew Y. Kuroda; and Daniel J. Boorstin. The document is divided into two parts, offering both English and Japanese versions of the same information. (CGD)
