  • Methods of Evaluation To Determine the Preservation Needs in Libraries and Archives: A RAMP Study with Guidelines. Cunha, George M. Archives Evaluation Methods Guidelines Library Planning Needs Assessment Preservation This Records and Archives Management Programme (RAMP) study is intended to assist in the development of basic training programs and courses in document preservation and restoration, and to promote harmonization of such training both within the archival profession and within the broader information field. Based on the assumption that conservation planning and management are essentially common sense and intelligent use of the abundant information available in the voluminous literature on the subject, the study suggests one way of conducting a conservation survey of the library building and its contents to obtain the information necessary for starting a conservation program. It is noted that, although this study is primarily concerned with books and documents, the information presented applies equally to all other nonbook materials found in libraries and archives. Information provided in the report addresses: (1) the scope of the problem; (2) causes for the degradation of books and paper records; (3) the requirements for long-range conservation programs; (4) getting started in a conservation program; (5) determining the physical condition of the materials in the collection; (6) preparing a survey report; (7) evaluating the spaces in the building; and (8) recommendations for the treatment of materials. An annex contains useful forms for recording conservation survey data. (31 references) (CGD)
