| contents | A Guide to Historical Literature and Other Issues in History Bibliography. Falk, Joyce Duncan And Others Bibliographies Higher Education History History Instruction Indexes Needs Assessment Reference Materials Research Tools In response to a request from the Research Division of the American Historical Association (AHA), the Association for the Bibliography of History (ABH) compiled a report on the options for a new history literature guide and on additional issues in history bibliography. The AHA previously conducted surveys to solicit opinions about the need for a library guide to history bibliography resources. This report discusses the issues and options for such a guide and offers a plan the AHA. First, the ABH reviewed currently available guides and serial bibliographies that focus on history, and second, the ABH considered guides and bibliographies available from other professional associations. The options for the new guide include: (1) a one-volume guide to popular history; (2) a one-or-two volume guide for historians and librarians; (3) a multi-volume guide divided by world regions or time periods; (4) a set of modular booklets on historical topics; (5) a combination of modules and a one-volume guide; and (6) a multi-functional database. Regardless of the option chosen, any new guide must be developed as a machine-readable database and be available both online and in print. For financing, it is suggested that the AHA apply for grants and solicit for funds from educational and national foundations and organizations. The document concludes with a summary of other history bibliography issues, such as journal abstracts and bibliographies and a history thesaurus. (DJC) |
