Guidelines are also provided for the development and initiation of an Integrated Pest Management program for facilities housing library and archival materials. Topics discussed include the following: (1) perspectives on pest management in libraries and archives; (2) hazards of these pests; (3) health concerns arising from pesticide use in buildings; (4) management responsibility for an effective, safe program; (5) the habits and life histories of the major pests (i.e., silverfish, firebrats, "bookworms," cockroaches, psocids or booklice, carpet beetles, clothes moths, termites, mice, rats, molds and mildew); (6) recognition of damage caused by each of these pests; (7) management and control of the pests; (8) the application of integrated pest management to library and archive situations; and (9) surveillance of the program. Final observations on costs and benefits conclude the report, and the 30 illustrations included in the narrative are listed. (27 references) (CGD) |
