Tubesing, Richard College Libraries Higher Education Library Acquisition Library Collection Development Library Material Selection This manual for the College of the Southwest (New Mexico) library delineates collection development policies and procedures for library and teaching faculty. The first section deals with collection development and maintenance responsibilities: knowledge of the collection; knowledge of college and course needs; library materials budget allocations; and techniques of materials selection. In the second section, topics related to collection maintenance are discussed: withdrawal of materials; replacement, repair, and rebinding; replacement copies; reclassification of the Dewey collection; and withdrawal procedures. Gift books, including gift material acceptance, exchange lists, and disposition, are addressed in the third section. The fourth section covers procedures for replacing copies, including technical services, and book selector and college librarian responsibilities. Guidelines for the evaluation of the book, serials, and journal collections, as well as for creating desiderata lists, are provided in the fifth section. The final section discusses two special collections--the Southwest Heritage Collection and the State Textbook Adoption Center Collection. (MES)
