Sperry, Robert Elementary Secondary Education Foreign Countries Libraries Postsecondary Education Vocational Education New Caledonia, a French territory (population 153,500) is the only Pacific island with a plurality European population (60,000), mostly French. There are also 17,300 Polynesian migrants and some Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indonesians living there. The South Pacific Commission Library holds 60,000 volumes and provides library services to the Francophone population. The main party of the Kanaks, the native Melanesians, decided in 1985 to boycott the state-run schools and established a chain of 46 primary schools. Official schools are operated by both the state and churches under the supervision of the Department of Education. The educational system is similar to that of metropolitan France. Only one non-European child out of seven goes on to high school. There are five institutions of higher education on the island. The bibliography contains 12 items written in English that relate to education in New Caledonia. (JB)
