contents Teaching the Research Paper to ESL Students in American Colleges and Universities. Brenner, Catherine A. Classroom Techniques College Students English (Second Language) Higher Education Limited English Speaking Research Papers (Students) Writing (Composition) Writing Evaluation Writing Instruction Writing Processes The instruction of writing research papers to English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) college students is discussed. The challenges facing all students learning to write research papers are noted, including choosing a topic, deciding on a thesis, research and documentation, and the actual writing of the paper. The challenges faced specifically by ESL students are examined, such as challenges in all language skill areas, cultural challenges, challenges in research and documentation, and in the paper's design. Six steps in the development and writing of a research paper are outlined: (1) choosing a topic; (2) general exploration of the topic; (3) formulating a hypothesis; (4) researching the hypothesis; (5) deciding on a definitive thesis, and (6) designing the paper for the American reader. A specific classroom approach for teaching this process is offered, including the introductory lecture, collaborative work with the students, important aspects of research and documentation (using the library and other available resources), and accompanying exercises. A suggested timetable is also provided, and a separate chapter addresses the evaluation of student work. The final section discusses a few additional resources, and a brief bibliography is appended.
