| contents | Analyzing Reference Tools: Thirty-Two Commonly Used Indexes in the Sterling C. Evans Library, Texas A&M University. Alexander, Barbara B., Ed. Academic Libraries Annotated Bibliographies Content Analysis Course Descriptions Higher Education Indexes Library Education Student Projects Student Research In a two-credit course at Texas A&M University, "Library Science: The Library and Learning," students learn practical applications in library research. One project requires students to analyze and critique a designated index, then, along with four other students, compare the indexes. The indexes cover a variety of subjects, both broad based and subject specific, and may be printed or on CD-ROM. Students receive a list of the indexes and a set of 12 questions to help in analyzing the reference tool. Students write either a short report describing the index or answer the 12 questions, and each group writes a comparison of their indexes. The course instructor edits the material, leaving the students' work intact as much as possible. The final report is then distributed to the class. Students learn to understand one index, and in doing so, learn that they can master many others. This report reproduces the list of 12 questions students use to critique each reference source, as well as the 32 student summaries; some include the instructor's comments in boldface. Organized by topic and number of works analyzed, the summaries include the following: Business (4); Current Events (8); Education (4); History/Political Science (4); Literature (4); Odds and Ends (4); and Science (4).
