Annual Reports Blindness Children Deafness Federal Aid Library Automation Library Personnel Library Planning Library Services Physical Disabilities Public Libraries Reading Programs State Aid State Libraries The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) lists its duties, goals, and recent accomplishments in this 1988 annual report. Some of these duties and goals are: (1) administering grants for library development and state aid; (2) providing consultation for library automation; (3) researching and answering reference questions; (4) lending books from its special collections; (5) serving the specialized needs of handicapped citizens through the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; and (6) developing a summer reading program for children. APLS also provides scholarships and continuing education money for library studies through the Library Services and Construction Act (Titles I and III) and sponsors workshops for librarians throughout the state. Accomplishments are reported under the following headings: (1) Agency Services (i.e., reference, information dissemination, technical services, reading programs, and handicapped services); (2) Circulation; (3) Agency Publications (e.g., APLS catalogs, guides, and newsletters); (4) Continuing Education; (5) Financial Responsibilities (including a breakdown of the Titles I and III grants distribution); (6) Special Projects (e.g., telecommunications devices for the deaf); and (7) Agency Personnel (in which newly created positions are detailed).
