Sperry, Robert Area Studies Educational Practices Elementary Secondary Education Foreign Countries History Libraries Postsecondary Education Private Education Public Education Resource Materials Pohnpei (Ponape) is one of the four Federated States of Micronesia. It consists of one high, volcanic island called Pohnpei Island, eight atolls, and Minto Reef. The main island is the second largest of the Caroline Islands. Kolonia, the capital, now has a population of 6,300; 20,000 Pohnpeians, many from the Atolls, live elsehwhere on the main island. The educational system is patterned after that of the United States. Elementary education is free and compulsory through grade 8, but entrance into secondary schools is competitive, based on examination results. Both public and private schools are in operation. In 1985/86 elementary schools in Pohnpei enrolled 7,032 pupils, and about 1,400 students attended secondary schools. That same school year, 21 percent of the island's total budget went to support the public schools. The Community College of the College of Micronesia on Pohnpei has an enrollment of 150 and offers an associate certificate in several fields. The Learning Resources Center has a 17,000 volume library. Two of the secondary schools have libraries, and a public library opened in 1988 with 8,000 donated books. The 32-item bibliography lists English-language materials dealing with education in Pohnpei. (JB)
