- Increasing Middle Grade Students' Motivation To Read Independently through Reading, Writing, and Data Base Programs. Witry, Susan M. Class Activities Databases Grade 5 Grade 6 Independent Reading Instructional Effectiveness Intermediate Grades Library Skills Program Development Reading Attitudes Reading Research Recreational Reading A practicum addressed the problem of a lack of reading motivation among middle grade students. An activity based program for middle grade students which integrated reading, book reports, book presentations, computer programs, and a library skills program was developed. Subjects, 32 fifth grade and 33 sixth grade students enrolled in a computer reading program at a school serving a public housing development located in a large Midwestern city, spent one class period per week engaged in recreational reading activities. Students selected their own books, read them, made a presentation to the class, and completed a follow-up writing assignment on the book. Records of books read and the completed writing assignments were kept in student logs as well as in a computer data base. A library skills program was implemented in the second semester of the school year. Results of student surveys indicated that all of the students: (1) developed a more positive attitude toward independent reading; (2) each read at least 10 books throughout the school year; and (3) became familiar with and knowledgeable in library skills. (Nine tables of data are included; 51 references, survey instruments, the book report form, and student reading log forms are attached.) (RS)
