Agency Cooperation Educational Cooperation Educational Policy Educational Research Educational Researchers Elementary Secondary Education Federal Programs Government Role Information Dissemination Information Needs Information Networks Laboratory Schools Public Agencies Research and Development This symposium was intended to promote discussion of policies, procedures, and activities to enhance collaboration among programs of the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) in ways that would contribute to more efficient and effective management of the nation's overall educational research, development, and dissemination (RD&D) system. The topics addressed were concerned with: (1) the increase in the importance of educational research; (2) the structure of the RD&D system; (3) the nature of collaboration; and (4) OERI's role in fostering collaboration. The report provides an executive summary of the session as well as the comments of the two speakers who introduced and moderated the symposium and the three members of the symposium panel: (1) Judi Conrad, ERIC Clearinghouse on Handicapped and Gifted Children; (2) Bruno Manno, OERI; (3) John Hollifield, Dissemination and Outreach Center for Research on Elementary and Middle Schools, Johns Hopkins University; (4) David Crandall, Laboratory for Educational Improvement of the Northeast and Islands; and (5) Susan Fuhrman, Center for Policy Research in Education, Rutgers University. Also provided are the comments of two reactors, Christopher Cross of Macro Systems, Inc., and Willis Hawley of Vanderbilt University, and the senior officials of the five OERI program offices: Milton Goldberg, Office of Research; Nelson Smith, Programs for the Improvement of Practice; Emerson Elliot, National Center for Education Statistics; Ray Fry, Library Programs; and Sharon Horn, Information Services. Bruno Manno delivered the closing remarks. (SD)
