  • Details for Consideration When Publishing Your State Journal. Newren, Edward F. Editing Elementary Secondary Education Library Associations Media Specialists Periodicals Publishing Industry Worksheets This paper discusses a number of factors that an editor should consider when publishing a state library/media journal, using examples from the production process of the Ohio Media Spectrum (OMS), the official journal of the Ohio Educational Library/Media Association. These examples have been selected to illustrate the various points: (1) selecting an issue's spotlight topic; (2) designing the cover; (3) obtaining manuscripts; (4) processing the manuscripts received; (5) the review procedure; (6) distribution of the issue; and (7) miscellaneous considerations such as helping contributors develop their ideas, handling controversial materials, evaluating the journal, indexing, advertising, and special columns. The appendixes include several OMS documents: a tentative list of spotlight topics for future issues; guidelines for authors; an article tracking sheet; printing bid specifications; an article evaluation checklist; an editorial and publishing agreement; subscription information; a description of a writers' workshop; a readership survey; notice of OMS selection for an American Library Association award; a sample page from the 1989 index; an excerpt from a column which reviews international literature for children and young people; and letters to the editor.
