- The Practicum in Library and Information Studies: A Qualitative Comparison of Expectations and Learning Outcomes. Mulder, Ursula E. Educational Objectives Foreign Countries Higher Education Interviews Library Education Outcomes of Education Practicums Qualitative Research This qualitative study of expectations for and outcomes of practicums in library and information science had four aims: (1) to discover whether faculty, host librarians, and students had the same objectives; (2) to ask students what they experienced in the practicum and compare this to their previously stated expectations; (3) to assess the relationship between faculty preparation of host librarians and of students and a successful practicum; and (4) to gather information on the importance of aspects of organization, such as timing and duration, to the practicum. The Department of Library and Information Studies at the Western Australian Institute of Technology was selected as the study site. A total of 69 respondents representing a sample of faculty, host librarians, and students were interviewed. Results indicated a congruence among expectations held by faculty, librarians, and students for learning outcomes. However, a lack of congruence between students' pre-practicum expectations and post-practicum outcomes was noted. There was no marked difference between the outcomes of students taking the practicum at the end of their programs compared to students in the middle of their programs. Interview schedules, data tables, a glossary, a description of the graduate program in library and information studies, and an extensive list of interview quotations organized by topic are included.
