| contents | Services and Resources for Children in Public Libraries, 1988-1989. Contractor Report. Survey Report. Lewis, Laurie Farris, Elizabeth Childrens Libraries Library Circulation Library Facilities Library Services Library Surveys National Surveys Public Libraries Questionnaires Use Studies This report presents the findings of the first national survey of public libraries on their services and resources available to children. Questionnaires were mailed to a national probability sample of 846 public libraries, nonrespondents were contacted by telephone, and the final response rate was 97%. Survey items included the availability of library resources and services to children, the usage of library services by children, the number of group programs at the library for children and child care-givers, the amount of library cooperation with schools and with preschools or day care centers, and the number and educational level of public service and children's librarians. Survey findings are presented by the following characteristics of library buildings: (1) the number of library users per week (a measure of library size); (2) type of library (main without branches, main with branches, and branch); (3) availability of a children's librarian; (4) number of hours open to the public per week (another measure of library size); (5) percentage of the library's book budget used for children's books; and (6) percentage of the total circulation that is made up of children's materials. Findings in the text focus on the number of library patrons per week and type of library. The other data are presented in nine tables. The survey instrument is included. (GL) |
