| contents | The Library Public Relations Recipe Book. Moran, Irene E., Ed. Community Involvement Financial Support Graphic Arts Library Extension Library Services News Writing Newsletters Outreach Programs Public Libraries Public Relations Publicity Writing Skills The 17 short pieces in this guide advise librarians how to enhance the profile of their organizations through increased interest in the media and more visible involvement in the community, and how to address budgeting, planning, and evaluating a public relations program. Fourteen rules of thumb for preparing and using news releases are described and then demonstrated on four sample releases. Concentrating on points of editorial style and format, the ins and outs of publishing an organizational newsletter are discussed. The best ways to incorporate graphic arts into a public relations effort are explained, and suggestions for designing audiovisual material are offered. Planning creative programs for the community--e.g., programs about soil erosion or stamp collecting--to supplement the library's other services is explored. Details are provided about preparing effective public service announcements for radio or television and for searching out the best broadcast opportunities. Skills required for promoting library displays and exhibits and for authoring annual reports are outlined. Discussions are included about communicating with funding sources--e.g., legislatures and library "friends"--and specific campaigns are exemplified. A guide to public relations professional organizations lists the mission and mailing address of each organization. An annotated bibliography is composed of 80 items relating to libraries and public relations. (SD) |
